NTUT Wall Competition

May 30, 2010

I was very pleased this morning to find that I have won a Judges Selection Award for my entry into The National Taipei University of Technology, biannual Design Competition. The competition summoned a great response with over 300 submissions, and asked entrants to conceptually define their own notion of an ecological ‘wall’;

“This competition takes on an elemental perspective to architectural design and sustainability.
Entrants are to imagine and produce creative proposals for an ecological “WALL”.
The evaluation and definition of “WALL” are open to applicants’ imaginations.
Entrants are free to choose or make site, real or virtual.” (NTUT  Wall Competition breif)

Winning proposals are on exhibition at NTUT, and will be compiled into a book for distribution later this year.  I proposed an urban agriculture intervention for dense residential areas, you can take a look at the full scheme below.

SEOUL – PLATFORM 09 – AVPD

October 27, 2009

On a recent stop over in Seoul, my fellow travelers and I stumbled upon a fantastic exhibition in Kimusa – once the site of the South Korean Defense Security Command, now a cluster of derelict buildings. The annual exhibition – Platform, featured a number of local as well as international contributers, and was framed around the theme ‘Void Of Memory’, exploring time the relationship between time, memory and space, as well as ideas of ‘New Institutionalism’.

For me the clear highlight of the exhibition was Danish collective AVPD’s instillation, Stalker II (2009). This work constructs a multifaceted infinite interior, choreographed by the specific placement of mirrors in the corners of a former office space. The angle of the mirrors allow for a 360 degree view of the space from each of the four corners. Within the instillation is impossible to see your own reflection front on-

AVPD write;

Instead of observing one’s mirror image the subject perceive oneself from behind as if she is watching a another person from behind. Apart from being one’s own observer the mirror reflections forces the subject to observe all other present subjects in the installation and simultaneously being observed by them.
